Summer Vacation

As it turns out, Israel isn’t in the cards for me this summer. The conference I’ve attended for the last five years didn’t invite me back (no hard feelings, five years was a great run) and the wedding of a good friend is limited to family only. So without a strong reason to go, other than habit, I’ve decided to go somewhere else.

But where?

I’ve been spending all my vacation days on Israel since 2006. With a whole world of options, I don’t have the slightest idea where to go.

I don’t want to go to London, because I don’t want to be around Olympic related crowds. I don’t want to go to a country that will give me shit about all the Israeli custom stamps in my passport or get a stamp that makes the next trip difficult.

I haven’t traveled extensively in Europe or mainland Asia. I’ve never been to Australia or New Zealand. Never been anywhere in Africa.

I speak Spanish, like to ride bikes and like to eat food. I dig museums, but prefer cafes. A cruise is possible, but I’m so offended by the Single Supplement that I might not go on one.

So… where should I go? I’m especially looking at you Dave2. You do more solo travel than anyone I know and have definite opinions that I want to hear.

I’m a single guy traveling alone, so I don’t know that I’m the best advice? I’ve been told more than once that a woman traveling alone is an entirely different experience with a different set of concerns? As for cruising… the single supplement is hard to take, yes, but the cruise lines only make money by maximizing passengers, so they pretty much have to charge it or everybody would want their own room. It’s something I’ve learned to live with, as there are places on earth that are best seen by boat (Glacier Bay and the Greek Islands comes to mind) and worth the cost.

You speak Spanish? Have you been to Spain? I’ve been five times in six years and am dying to go again. I hate to narrow it down further than that because there are so many amazing areas, and you should explore the place that speaks to you… buuuuuut Barcelona is a city I’ve visited three times now, and I just love it. And to the south is the Costa del Sol and Malaga, gateway to amazing places like Granada and Seville. Ooh! I also loved exploring Mallorca if islands are your thing. And wherever you go, venturing out to the smaller cities always leads to adventure! Spain doesn’t come up on many people’s travel wish list and this surprises me. Some of my favorite travel memories are from that country.

I finally managed to get to Australia last Fall (for their Spring) and it was beyond wonderful… but hideously expensive. Partly because you have to fly everywhere since the cities are far, far apart, but mostly because every single thing you buy… from museum tickets to food… are pricey. I allowed what I thought was a very generous budget, but ended up with a mound of credit card debt because the expenses just kept piling up! Still… if it’s a place you want to see, some experiences are worth any price. Australia is one of those!

    All that being said…

Safe travels, wherever you may go. 🙂

I knew I asked you for a reason! Spain has been on my list for a long time, then I became a Latin America traveler more than a European traveler. I’m overwhelmed by having SO MANY OPTIONS and feeling like this must be THE BEST VACATION. Even though I’m probably going to nap, read, nap and read.
